I put on my big girl panties and went to the local butcher shop. I stood there dumbfounded. Granted, I've been in there before, but still. I told him what I needed and then he asked how many. Ummm... I had no idea. We all got through that awkward moment, decided on a number of ribs and then I was on my way! I had the rest of the ingredients at home -- which was great! Everything was pretty basic, so it worked out perfectly!
I started cooking a little later than planned... but it all turned out great! It just took almost 3 hours to cook, but was worth it! It was fun to use our new dutch oven and knives we got for the wedding. They were still in their boxes. I kept my computer on the counter and just followed the directions to a T. The key, I think, were the pictures! I knew what everything was suppose to look like -- and it made it soooo easy!! I was amazed! I kept texting pics to Sew and Beth the whole time I was cooking! After all, I was pretty astonished it was actually turning out like it should! Ha! I made some super wonder over-roasted asparagus to go with the dish! TO DIE FOR! We are huge asparagus fans (I usually steam them) ... and these were wonderful!
So... here are some pics!
Getting everything ready... there's my new dutch oven! Love it!
Following those pictures on my laptop!
I know! Fail on the potatoes! But they still turned out ok! Ha!
Yummiest things ever!
Success!
My DH said it was the best meal I've ever cooked! There wasn't a lot of competition for that title... but it was good to know! Now that I have a little confidence, I think I'll start cooking 'good' meals a little more often! YUMMM!

Oh my gosh!! Except for a few details, I could have written this! I am cooking PW's pot roast as we speak (with Sew's potatoes. She is praying for me and being my moral support)!!! I have been married for 20 years this July... and I do not cook! So, this is huge for me! I am so excited for you. PW has changed our lives (and our husbands' lives, ha!). The meal you made looks fabulous!!!
Oh no! Not you, too!
Everyone is going PW-obsessed right when I’m trying to eat better (as in rabbit food I’d rather fling on the floor than to try and choke down). These yummy looking pictures are going to make me cave!
Seriously, great job. I did not learn how to cook at all until I had been married 3-4 years, so I understand that pride of actually making something that goes beyond edible and is actually (dare I say) GREAT.
Great job! That looks amazing...I'm going to have to jump on this bandwagon!
This looks great, Jenny! You did awesome. I wish I had some right. now.
When you said challenged I had no idea:) Don't worry though. I remember going to the butcher too asking what I needed for pot roast! Cuts of meat are kind of a mystery anyway.
You are cooking for me the next time I'm in Indy and it might be soon....Just maybe!!! I might be in town for 5 days too!!!! So excited!
I know Ann - I'm such a joiner!! But I'm on the bandwagon! Everyone jump on! Ha! It was so easy to follow the pictures! And Sew... you totally get instant mashed potatoes when you come to town! I'll make you some Joe's meatloaf with them! Ha! And I can't wait to see you!!
You see. That's what happens when you let people know you can cook. . . they just invite themselves over :)
I should clarify then... I've made ONE good meal since being married! Well... I do make a mean taco thingy too! But that's about it!! Ha!! But any of you are welcome anytime!! :) I'd even break out my good dishes for you all!
Hey, ya'll: Party at Jenny's house!!!
That looked awesome! (And I giggled out loud when I read 'big girl panties', I thought I was the only one who ever used that phrase in day to day life :) )
That looks amazing! I did not used to cook very much either, but I've started cooking a lot since we got married (with the help of my DH) and now I LOVE it. There are so many good blogs and web sites and cookbooks with fun, delicious ideas...
GO YOU!
Mmmmm looks amazing. I'm also cracking up that you use the computer as your recipe card. I do the same thing with my mac! It serves as entertainment and recipe all at the same time! Love it!!
Well done! I ditto Ann's comment - I am trying to "watch what I eat" and, to this point, have avoided PW's blog. I am about to give in, though. My friends and I like to cook and have actually used it to our advantage. We have a meal exchange each week so that we don't have to cook every day (just every other day). It's so nice to have homemade food that I didn't have to make!
A meal exchange??!! How cool! I'm not sure who would want to exchange with me, but I'd gladly take a few homemade meals!! I might even dirty a few pots and pans so my DH thought I cooked!! Hahahahahaha! Just kidding!
I "heart" PW! I made her short ribs once as well and my DH gobbled them right up. I am hoping to try her pot roast soon! Thanks for posting the pics...they are great! God Bless!
