What the heck??!!!!

Seriously, what in the world is this world coming to??  Have any of you seen this?  PETA is hosting a contest for a FREE VASECTOMY!  Get your dog or cat neutered and you can enter the contest to get fixed just like your pooch! What??
"Every year in the U.S., an estimated 6 to 8 million lost, abandoned, or unwanted dogs and cats enter animal shelters. The best way to combat the companion-animal overpopulation crisis is to have your cat or dog neutered. And with a global population of almost 7 billion humans, more of our species could use a (voluntary) snip too.
Now, one lucky man can be reproduction-free, free of charge, just like his pooch or feline friend. PETA will give one free vasectomy to a man who has recently had his companion cat or dog neutered. Don't worry boys—you'll still be able to enjoy sex. But your neutered dog will be less likely to face the health and behavioral problems that un-neutered dogs experience." - Per PETA
WTH??!!! It makes me want to vomit!  Who the heck even thought of this idea!!??  I'm all about controlling the pet population... but the human population at the same time via a contest - ummm, NO!  The contest also just happens to fall at the same time as National Infertility Awareness Week!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!!!!!  Dang you PETA!

I don't know why I'm surprised. It really shouldn't shock me but it's just so sick!

Great blog -- I wrote about the same thing over at my blog and, like you, I was SHOCKED and DISGUSTED. So basically PETA is saying that I'm an animal and I need to be neutered for my own good? Um, go jump off a cliff, PETA.

That's disgusting. And disturbing. Gross.

Not only is it disturbing, but I cannot for the life of me find out how infertility connects with the need/desire for a vasectomy. Hello? That will not help you conceive. I would have much rather seen them give the money they will spend on someone's vasectomy to a couple pursuing adoption. Even a few hundred dollars helps when you are adopting.

I feel so sick for the man who "wins" and happily trades in a healthy fertility for complete sterilization. How sad!

I was just thinking how awful it would be to be married to someone who Did that. Horrible!

I know I represent a disagreeable philosophy for most of you, but as a secular, non-Catholic woman, I do think about the immense toll of our population on the world's resources. I think about the billions of pounds of refuse tossed away everyday, the expansion of suburban areas into wild habitats and the expense of producing foods and making it available 24-7 in grocery stories. As silly and unethical as it may seem, I wonder if I want to bring another person into the world who will most certainly be impacted by these issues within their lifetime? On the other hand, I appreciate large families that live frugally and conscientiously but I can't see the same trajectory for myself (having a large family).

another thought that comes to mind here is that we really need a better healthcare system if the most successful means of fundraising includes offering a free medical service.

Respectfully yours,
gwen

It is so disordered and twisted. I remember seeing a billboard once years ago for a urologist who does vasectomies, and they the ad was something like, "Get a vasectomy for your favorite dad this Father's Day!" or something like that. Sigh.

Oh, and it also reminds me of the "generous" offer of Planned Parenthood in NYC after the massacre of 9/11. They were offering free abortions to women as their form of "charity"!! As if the slaughter of the 3,000 wasn't enough, they offered to add to the violence and body count.

I will never understand that mindset....

Ew!! That's digusting! Let me tell you I am "reproduction-free" so far and I do not feel one bit lucky.

Gwen is right that our society is far too wasteful. I could not agree more on that point. The world and its resources are a gift from God and many people and organizations are taking it for granted, tarnishing and destroying it. But the real answer here is to change our ways and take better care of our resources...not "spaying or neutering your human."
