Day 4 - Beth

It's my birthday today!  Whoot!  I'm 35!  My age doesn't bother me a bit.  I was going to dedicate day 4 to things like my husband, life in general, a great year, etc.  But then I woke up and received a number of texts from my great friend Beth.

Beth is one of the best friends ever.  She is hysterical and caring and would do anything for anyone.  She has been a rock these past few weeks... encouraging me through every moment of my new mommy haze.  She is simply the best.  She also gets the award for most frequent visitor of Baby George.

Beth is one of those friends who will be a friend for life.  She's one of those friends who really celebrates your birthday.  This was apparent with all my texts this morning.

Wanna see what my great friend Beth sent me on my 35th Birthday??????  Here you go!

Yep... my great friend Beth!  Hahahahaha!  I seriously could NOT stop laughing about these pictures!!!  LOVE THEM... AND YOU BETH!!!!!!

Right after getting the pics, George had this to say about Beth.

But George really feels like this...

Quick Takes/Thankful days 1 and 2

1.  George is almost 3 weeks old!  How did that happen?!  Seems like just yesterday I was anxiously awaiting my due date and now I have a 3 week old!  Crazy!

2.  Nursing is going a little better.  It's still a struggle most days, but it is improving.  That tells you how bad it was!  I'm meeting with lactation consultants twice a week, pumping, nursing, still taking prescription meds and supplements, etc.  I don't know how long I can keep all this up, but for now, I'm doing it.  George is past his birth weight (go G!) weighing in at 7lbs 11oz now.  Whoot!  So all this effort is working.  Praise the Lord!

I am a bit more at peace with the whole situation.  I just want him to get what he needs.  I want what is best for him - which is to grow and develop and be strong and healthy.  I think when I accepted this and just surrendered, things improved!  In fact, I went to my lactation meeting yesterday and the little man took in THREE OUNCES from me!  Yep, while nursing!  He had never taken in any more than ONE little ounce while nursing before.  Whoot!  The LC there was so excited!  She said, "Praise the Lord!" and we did just that!

So right now the plan is to focus on nursing in the morning when it appears I have more milk.  I will continue to pump after each feeding and feed him the pumped milk in the evening when he has more difficulty nursing and my supply is low.  We have another LC meeting on Monday evening, where we will see if his evening feedings have improved.  We shall see!

3.  On a similar note, I think my boobs will lose all magical powers with my husband after all of this!  Hahahaha!  I am constantly hanging out and wearing a pumping bra (not all that attractive)!  I'm pumping as I'm typing.  Yep, hands free pumping bras rock!

4. I am managing to get a little sleep here and there.  Not much, but I typically do 'ok' on little sleep.  About once a day, I hit a "need to sleep now" wall.  I rest and get back up and start going again.  It's amazing how the body just takes over.  It's like I'm on no sleep auto pilot.  I even manage to take a shower and brush my teeth most days.  I consider this a major accomplishment!

5.  Doug and I voted early!  The line was freakishly long for a Monday mid-afternoon.  I'm glad people are exercising their right to vote... just hoping that they are voting for the right guy.  George went along for the ride.  He was a pretty cute voter if I do say so myself.

6.  I went to my first "mom" Halloween party this week.  I'd been to lots of parties before, but this was the first time I went and took my baby!  Very fun!

7.  Best quick take of all... a whole bunch of pics of my little man!  And if you'd like to see some more pics... check out Julie's blog.  She came over and took some pics when George was one week old.  He was a little uncooperative, but she managed to get some great shots!!

************So... I'm not sure I will be able to blog all the days of thanks this month... I'm already behind.***********

Day 1: I'm obviously thankful for my little man, George and my hubby, Doug.  They are my world!

Day 2: I'm thankful for a sleeping baby so I can have a few minutes to blog!

Now... here are those pictures I promised!

Prayers Needed Please

Where's The Milk???

I hate that this is my first post-baby post... but it is.  I am in need of your prayers ladies.

George and I are having some major nursing issues.  It's breaking my little heart that the little man is having so much trouble eating.

Turns out my nipples are funky - so we are using a nipple shield.  I had no clue - they looked normal to me!  His tongue is also an issue.  So together with my funky nipples (aren't you glad you know my nipples are funky!?) and his tongue, there are a lot of latch issues.  A LOT!

I'm also having a lot of supply issues.  I knew there was a risk of this... with my history of PCOS and thyroid problems.  So I prepared a head of time.  Talked to LC, my doctors, my expert nursing friends, etc.  I was hopeful that this wouldn't be an issue... but it appears it is.

I'm doing as much as possible to boost my supply.  I'm pumping.  I'm taking supplements and prescription meds.  I'm eating oatmeal.  You name it, I'm doing it.  It's not helping all that much.

The lactation consultants have been really wonderful.  I think I have the lactation department on speed dial.  I've been to support groups this week and had an outpatient appointment so they could watch George eat.  He did fine there.  Notsomuch at home.

Now we have the added bonus of blisters and bleeding nipples.

Yowzers.

I have been fighting myself the last few days.  Fighting the feeling that I'm already failing as a mother because I *may* not be able to nurse my child long term because of my stupid fertility issues.  The failure word just kept looming over me.  Pair that with the stress of nursing with all these issues, no sleep and my whacked out hormones... wow.  Not fun.

This morning I was texting Sew and I realized something else.  So much of me wanting to nurse is about ME.  I mean, the main reason I want to nurse is because it is best for George.  But then there are all these other reasons that really have NOTHING to do with George -- but everything to do with me.

I want to be a BFing mom.

I want to be part of the BF club, so to speak.  At work, all the mom's that nurse gather, talk about it, support each other -- even have access to their own 'lactation support' room.  I have so wanted to be part of the mom club for so long... and especially have a key to that room.  Sounds silly when I say it, but it's true.  I don't want people to judge if I have to give my baby formula or another supplement.  I'm afraid they will.

I want the convenience of BFing.  We will have a hard time with the cost of a supplement.

I don't want to feel like a failure.

Ugh.

See... so much is about ME??  I need prayers to let my pride shrink.  I need to die to myself here and just do whatever is best for my baby -- which ultimately is just feeding him.

So, please pray along with me.  There are so many emotions happening here lately.  I feel like a crazy mom!

One that that did make me feel better -  this amazing LC at the hospital.  She was emailing me last night as I was trying to nurse and crying at the same time.

She had this to say:

God rejoices that you want the best for your baby.
God wants the best for you and that includes rest and peace. ENJOY GEORGE and rest in God's love tonight,
knowing He has you and your family in the palm of his hand.

It makes me cry and feel that everything will be ok every time I read it.  What an amazing woman.  Thank you for the prayers ladies.
